Psychotherapy & Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) |
"There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so" - William Shakespeare
There are many different schools of psychotherapy – from Freudian psychoanalysis to the currently popular Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). I use a variety of approaches that researchers have found to be very effective. I may use one, some or all of these approaches – including Hypnotherapy.
During psychotherapy, we focus on the SOLUTION and HOW to overcome a problem, rather than on the problem itself or why a person might have it. We will probably need to work on whatever triggered a problem in the first place - in other words, find the root cause - but this is not always the case. Sometimes, it is a matter of learning new skills and habits. Psychotherapy can provide a positive framework for moving forward, rather than an extended raking over of old ground.
Solution-Oriented and Strategic Psychotherapies look for solutions to problems (problems from the past or in the present), and work towards goals which you and I establish on the very first session. In this way, we can measure progress. Everyone has strengths and resources, and we can identify and use yours to good effect in resolving the situation.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) works with the connection between what we think, how we behave and our emotions. By learning more empowering ways of thinking, we can begin to break down old, unhelpful, unconscious, patterns and create new, supportive behaviours which result in more positive emotions.
The Human Givens approach is based on the practical reality of what it is to be human. We all have basic needs, which need to be met to maintain emotional wellbeing – for example, we all need to give and receive attention. This approach ensures you are getting your basic needs met in a healthy way.
